Destination Weddings Facts You Should Know

Destination weddings are on the rise worldwide. Couples like you are seeking intimacy, adventure, economy, and a connection with heritage and culture that they can’t always get at home. While scouring Destination Weddings Travel Group’s 2015 Destination Weddings Report recently, I noted that many of the trends in this growing industry sound familiar – the top four wedding destinations, for example, continue to be charming old beach favorites: Mexico, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and Hawaii.

But other destinations are becoming popular too. Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, St. Lucia, and Grenada are now the world’s top emerging wedding destinations, according to the same report. Couples are not only looking for that perfect spot in the sand for their exchange of vows, but are also seeking once-in-a-lifetime adventures and excursions to share with their loved ones while they celebrate their unions.

Not every wedding is wave-side on the beach, of course. Non-beach destination weddings are also growing in popularity. Couples are turning to Europe, for example for unique sites like ancient castles.

Destination weddings appeal to couples from nearly every cultural background as well. Southeast Asian weddings are among the most popular growing markets as resorts begin to recognize that customizing menus and locating partners who can handle special décor and entertainment requests are great for business.

Did you know that destination weddings, on average, are substantially cheaper than at-home weddings? The average cost of an at-home wedding, as cited in the report, exceeds $30,000. The average destination wedding, on the other hand, costs less than $10,000, and has for more than 10 years.

If an at-home wedding doesn’t seem like the best fit for you, consider taking your show on the road. You can find destination weddings to suit just about every personality type. There are scenic beaches, mountaintop vistas, and architectural options with a historical feel, and you can find all of them both at home in the United States as well as abroad.  bride on balcony

Does a destination wedding sound like just what you need? Consult a destination wedding planner for advice about the timing of bookings, the kind of facility that can serve you best, how to prepare for your destination wedding, and anything else you must know when you take the leap. Pull out your favorite suitcase and brush off your passport – you may just find yourselves celebrating the next destination wedding of the year!
