Beyond Burlap: Wooden Décor Options for Your Rustic Wedding

Ask any wedding planner to name the most popular décor of all time and I’m willing to bet more than half will mention “Rustic Chic” (the other half would probably say “Simple and Elegant”). It’s not surprising, really. “Rustic Chic” endures generation after generation, seamlessly tying past to present. If you doubt this wedding design truth, search “new rustic barn wedding locations” in your area and you’re bound to find something in driving distance, no matter where you live. In some areas you’ll find dozens!

Recently, “Rustic Chic” has come to mean burlap, lace, paper straws and mason jars. Oh, and twinkly white lights. They are absolutely lovely, and I totally confess to drooling over Pinterest boards and Instagram feeds full of just these things. There are other approaches and complementary accents, though and it’s fun to try something new or different! Among our favorite current wedding decorating ideas is to use raw and crafted wood to create unique décor pieces.

Of course, you could trek in to the forest to find your own ideal downed tree, then escape to your tool shed to whittle your way to beautiful accents. But we’d much rather haunt Etsy and Pinterest and check out the many options our favorite sources have for wood-based wedding decorations.

Where can you incorporate these accents into your personal wedding design? All of the following are available in rustic wooden versions perfect for the celebration of new lives together:

  • Ring boxes in lieu of traditional pillows
  • Cake stands
  • Aisle, guest book table, bar and directional signage
  • Creative alternatives to guest books
  • Cake toppers
  • Favors
  • Chargers and guest table numbers
  • Escort cards and place cards
  • Wedding card boxes
  • Monograms for table displays
  • Wooden flower girl baskets

Wooden accents are versatile, coordinating with most color palettes. You can go whole hog and turn your wedding into the lumberjack’s special, or just subtly incorporate a stunning piece here and there. Wood can add a masculine feel to wedding décor, but can also be made to look quite feminine. And like weddings in general, it has a timeless quality that invokes nostalgic trips down memory lane, but (even more important) looks just amazing in your gorgeous wedding photos.
