Wedding Trends We Love: Illuminated Monograms

Maybe it’s the kid in this wedding planner, but I have a guilty love of one of today’s rather unique, and maybe a little over-the-top, wedding lighting trends: giant illuminated letters. The very retro-feel letters and symbols are 3-dimensional casings holding classic light bulbs and they come in a rainbow of wedding-perfect shades. There are smaller, table-appropriate letters, of course, that are perfect as accents on guest book tables or to complement a wedding cake display. My secret fascination, however, is the larger-than-life prop version that allows a couple to see their names – or their monogram – in lights.

Creative couples are taking these behemoths to some really unique places, like golf courses and waterfront boardwalks after beach weddings. They offer photographers some interesting, and different, opportunities. Other couples invite guests to pose with their monogram as one of the latest entertaining wedding reception ideas, kind of a twist on the photo booth. The resulting pictures can be assembled in collages or albums that your friends and loved ones sign as an alternative to traditional guest books.

Monograms aren’t the only use for the versatile letters. They can be employed as signage guiding guests to your bar, food stations, or even from a ceremony to a cocktail period or reception. The signs in subtle colors with simple white lights can actually look very classy, although, I’m sure that wilder flashing or color-changing signs will satisfy the more adventurous or club-oriented types planning more unique weddings!

In coordinated hues straight from your palette, the letters are perfect for bridal showers and other wedding events. Both the casing and the light bulbs can be customized to match your color scheme. Your wedding expert (planner or designer) can help source exactly what you need to enhance the look and incorporate the letters as a unique lighting option.

Giant illuminated retro-feel monograms may not be timeless, but they are fun accents for the right wedding design today. It will be interesting to see how they evolve! I’m always looking forward to seeing what is coming up next. I promise to keep sharing the glamorous, the gorgeous, and the occasionally gaudy, offering you the very best expert advice to help you plan your perfect wedding!
